Best overall: Irusu Play VR Plus at ₹2,422 (no remote). Best value: Irusu Monster at ₹1,974. Cheapest to try VR: Cardboard VR viewer at ₹269.

Key facts

  • Every headset we found under ₹5,000 is a phone VR box: your phone is the screen, and it tracks head turns, not movement.
  • Phone size: many phones are now 6.7 to 6.9 inches. JioDive takes up to 6.7, the cardboard viewer up to 6, the Irusu Amazon boxes we list up to 6.9.
  • iPhone: YouTube’s VR mode does not work on iPhone or iPad, per Google’s help page. Use the Cardboard app instead.
  • Remote: Irusu’s buying guides say its remote is not compatible with iPhones or Samsung Galaxy phones (an older Irusu page says iOS works with limits). On those phones, buy the version without a remote.
  • Gyroscope: needed for head tracking. A “device incompatible” message in the Cardboard app may mean your phone has none (Cardboard help).
  • Real VR with its own screen starts at about ₹43,999 in India: an imported Quest 3S or a PS VR2.

Under ₹5,000, a VR headset is a box with lenses that holds your phone. Some are worth it for 360 videos, films on a big virtual screen and simple games, as long as your phone fits and has a gyroscope. Irusu Play VR Plus: best VR headset under ₹5,000 for most people

Irusu lists 40mm lenses with focus and IPD adjustment, a 110 degree field of view, built in headphones and a touch button. It takes phones from 4.7 to 6.9 inches with a gyroscope, so big 6.7 to 6.9 inch phones fit.

We link the version without a remote, at ₹2,422. The version with a remote and mic was ₹2,864, ₹442 more. Irusu says its remote doesn’t work with iPhones or Samsung Galaxy phones, so buy it only for another Android phone.

One catch from Irusu itself: the Amazon listing for the remote version says to avoid YouTube VR because of compatibility issues. Plan on VR apps and downloaded 360 videos.

Ratings are middling: 3.3 stars from 832 ratings. Every Irusu listing we link sits between 3.1 and 3.4, so read the limits section first.

It takes 4 to 6.9 inch phones. A version listed as Irusu Ultra VR, with no remote in the box, was ₹2,436 but has only 20 ratings.

JioDive: best for glasses wearers, with its own app

JioDive costs ₹1,399 on jio.com, and it comes with Jio’s own VR app. Jio’s compatibility page says it works with Android 9 or above and iOS 15 or above, on phones from 4.7 to 6.7 inches with a gyroscope and an accelerometer. Field of view is 90 degrees.

The JioImmerse app was last updated on 24 June 2026 on the Play Store. Jio says you need a Jio number to log in to it, though any network works. JioDive fits over spectacles, with focus wheels that correct eye power up to a certain level.

Two catches. Many new phones are 6.8 or 6.9 inches, past Jio’s 6.7 inch limit. And we could not find JioDive on Amazon or Flipkart search, and we could not confirm stock on jio.com.

Irusu Mini VR: budget Irusu box

The Mini is Irusu’s entry box, ₹1,499 on Irusu’s own store, or ₹1,799 with a remote. Irusu gives two phone sizes for it: its setup guide says 4.5 to 6.9 inches, and its own list page says 4.7 to 6.69. If your phone is over 6.7 inches, pick the Monster instead. Irusu says you can wear glasses with it.

We could not find it on Amazon or Flipkart search, although Irusu’s site says it is also on Amazon, so our link goes to Irusu and is not an affiliate link.

Durlabh Darshan VR: best gift for parents

It is a phone VR headset sold with an app of 80+ VR temple yatras, so elderly parents who can’t travel can do darshan, pooja and aarti from home. The app is in English, Hindi and Telugu. It is ₹2,800 with a 1 year app plan, or ₹3,300 with 2 years.

It is the best rated box we found on Amazon.in among those with 100 or more ratings: 4.2 stars from 171 ratings. We have not used the app, so treat the content list as the seller’s claim.

Cardboard VR viewer: try VR for the least money

For ₹269 you can try phone VR before spending ₹2,000 or more. It is a cardboard viewer with 25mm lenses and no button.

Two things to know: the listing says no head strap, though its photo shows one, and it takes phones up to 6 inches or 75 mm wide (its spec table says 5.8). Measure your phone first. If it fits, try the Cardboard app.

From each listing and the maker’s own pages, 18 Oct 2026. Not listed means they don’t say; dearer one means only the version with a remote has one. Six of seven list iPhone support (the Mini doesn’t say), and Irusu’s guides say its remotes skip iPhone and Samsung Galaxy.

What you can still use with phone VR in 2026

Phone VR has shrunk. Google dropped Daydream View in 2019 and that year open sourced Cardboard and said its VR SDK was no longer being actively developed. Some well known VR apps are gone from the Play Store. Still on the Play Store on 18 Oct 2026, with their last update:

These are simple, look around games. For anything you steer, a Bluetooth gamepad helps; our Android controller guide has options. Pair the gamepad in your phone’s Bluetooth settings before you put the phone in the box.

Older lists also name Procus and Shinecon boxes. On 18 Oct we found no Procus listing in Amazon or Flipkart search, and its websites did not load. Shinecon style boxes come from many small sellers with few ratings, so we could not pick one we trust.

The honest limits of a VR box

  • You can look around, not walk around. A phone tracks which way your head turns, not where your body moves. That is called 3DoF.
  • Your phone is the screen. The lenses magnify it, so a low resolution screen looks grainy.
  • Heat and battery. VR keeps the screen bright and the sensors busy, so phones run warm and drain fast. A phone cooler won’t fit inside the box, so take breaks.
  • Motion sickness. Start with short sessions.

For real VR gaming, no box at this price gets close; that needs the step up below.

The step up: what real VR costs in India

Real VR headsets have their own screens and track movement. The cheapest we found in India on 18 Oct 2026 were ₹43,999 and ₹44,999:

  • Meta Quest 3S: Meta does not officially sell Quest in India; India is not on its list of shipping countries. On 18 Oct 2026 Flipkart listed an imported Quest 3S 128GB at ₹43,999 (MRP ₹54,990) from a third party seller with a 1 year seller warranty, not Meta’s. Its box contents named a Quest 2, so check any import carefully.
  • PlayStation VR2: Sony’s ShopAtSC store lists it at an MRP of ₹44,999, but it showed Notify Me (out of stock) on 18 Oct 2026. Sony says it needs a PS5, sold separately. Weighing a PS5 first? Read is the PS5 Pro worth it in India.
  • Try before you buy: some gaming cafes have VR; see our VoidZone Mumbai review and the VR cafe in our Chennai cafe guide.

How we chose

We took the boxes Indians search for and that ranking pages recommend, and checked each on Amazon.in, Flipkart, jio.com and irusu.co.in on 18 Oct 2026. We kept boxes with a working buy button on Amazon.in or the maker’s store. JioDive is the exception: jio.com showed a price, but we could not confirm stock.

We did not use these headsets ourselves; ratings are Amazon’s own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the best VR headset in India under ₹5,000?

For most people, the Irusu Play VR Plus: ₹2,422 without a remote or ₹2,864 with one, built in headphones, phones up to 6.9 inches. Cheaper: the Monster at ₹1,974.

Can I use VR on my mobile phone?

Yes, if it has a gyroscope and fits the box. Google’s Cardboard help asks for Android 4.1 or higher; JioDive needs Android 9 or iOS 15. Install the Cardboard app: a device incompatible message may mean your phone has no gyroscope.

Does a VR box work with an iPhone?

The box fits, but YouTube’s VR mode does not work on iPhone or iPad, per Google. The Cardboard app and JioImmerse do have iOS versions, and Irusu’s guides say its remote doesn’t work with iPhones, so pick a box without one.

Is a VR box worth buying?

For 360 videos, films and a first taste of VR, yes, at under ₹3,000. For real games, no; phone VR only tracks head turns, and you’d need a headset like a Quest or PS VR2 for more.

How much does a phone VR headset cost in India?

From ₹269 for a cardboard viewer to about ₹3,000 for a branded box with headphones. On 18 Oct 2026, the Irusu boxes we list cost ₹1,499 to ₹2,864, and JioDive ₹1,399.

Is VR growing or dying?

Headsets are shrinking while smart glasses grow. IDC expected VR and mixed reality headset shipments to fall 42.8% in 2025, and by the second quarter of 2026 headsets were 15.4% of XR shipments.

Do VR boxes need batteries or a PC?

The box itself needs no battery; a bundled Bluetooth remote may. And it cannot connect to a PC: it is a phone holder with lenses. PC VR needs a headset with its own display.

How do I connect a controller to a VR box?

Pair the controller or remote in your phone’s Bluetooth settings first, then put the phone in the box. Irusu’s guides say its remote is not compatible with iPhones or Samsung Galaxy phones; a Bluetooth gamepad that supports your phone is the other route.

Can I watch 3D movies on a VR box?

Yes. Side by side 3D videos and 360 videos play in a VR video player app, which shows one half to each eye.
