Game Pass in India changed three times in nine months: an October rename and price hike, an April price cut (₹1,389 to ₹1,089 for Ultimate), and cloud gaming actually launching here with Pune and Chennai servers. Best tier for most PC players is PC Game Pass at ₹879. Console day one players want Ultimate at ₹1,089. Everyone else should run the rupee math below before paying anything.

Key facts

  • Current India prices, checked on the official store July 12, 2026: Essential ₹499, Premium ₹699, PC Game Pass ₹879, Ultimate ₹1,089 a month
  • Ultimate went ₹829 to ₹1,389 in October 2025, then down to ₹1,089 in April 2026, the biggest price rollback Game Pass has ever made. The trade: new Call of Duty is no longer day one
  • Cloud gaming is finally LIVE in India since November 2025, with servers in Pune and Chennai. Near them it is genuinely good, far from them it is honestly rough
  • If you still pay an old price like ₹349 or ₹449 on auto renew, do NOT cancel. Legacy prices survive only while the subscription stays active
  • We re verify prices and offers on this page every 90 days, and sooner when Microsoft moves them

On July 28, Halo: Campaign Evolved launches at around ₹4,000 as a standalone purchase, or as part of a Game Pass subscription from ₹879. That is the kind of month where Game Pass makes obvious sense. The problem is that everything else about it in India stopped being obvious last October, when Microsoft renamed every tier, raised prices by up to 109 percent, then cut some of them back six months later while quietly removing Call of Duty from day one.

This page is the current, India specific answer: what each tier costs today on the official store, which one fits how you actually play, what the new cloud servers in Pune and Chennai really deliver, why you must not cancel an old cheap subscription, and the rupee arithmetic against just buying your games in Steam sales. Prices were checked on xbox.com’s India store on July 12, 2026, with screenshots in this article.

What changed: the nine months that confused everyone

Three separate events between October 2025 and April 2026 rewrote Game Pass in India, and most advice online still describes the old world. Here is the timeline that makes everything below make sense.

  • October 1, 2025: tiers renamed. Core became Essential, Standard became Premium, Ultimate stayed Ultimate. Prices jumped: Essential ₹349 to ₹499, Premium ₹619 to ₹699, PC ₹449 to ₹939, Ultimate ₹829 to ₹1,389. Existing auto renewing subscriptions kept their old price. Cloud gaming came to Essential, Premium and Ultimate, while PC Game Pass stayed install only
  • November 2025: Xbox Cloud Gaming launched in India, the 29th country to get it, with server infrastructure in Pune and Chennai. Free to play games like Fortnite stream without any subscription at all
  • April 21, 2026: the reversal. Ultimate cut from ₹1,389 to ₹1,089 and PC from ₹939 to ₹879, announced by Microsoft Gaming chief Asha Sharma as the biggest price reduction in Game Pass history. The same announcement removed new Call of Duty titles from day one, they now arrive about a year after launch

One warning before the tier breakdown: several sites ranking on Google right now quote a ₹749 Ultimate price or claim Mumbai cloud servers exist. Both are fabricated. Every price on this page comes from the official Xbox India compare page, screenshotted below.

1. Game Pass Ultimate: the everything tier

Ultimate is the tier Microsoft actually wants you on, and after the April 2026 price cut it finally has an argument again. ₹1,089 a month gets the whole catalog of 400 plus games, new Xbox first party releases on launch day, EA Play, Fortnite Crew and Ubisoft+ Classics bundled in, and the best quality slice of cloud streaming. Halo: Campaign Evolved lands in it on July 28, the same day it sells for ₹4,000 plus elsewhere, India gets no regional discount on it.

The honest history matters though. Ultimate cost ₹829 in September 2025, jumped 67 percent to ₹1,389 overnight in October, and came back down to ₹1,089 in April after enough people cancelled worldwide. The price cut also came with a quiet trade: new Call of Duty titles no longer arrive day one, they show up about a year later. If CoD day one was your reason for Ultimate, that reason is gone.

Buy it if you play new releases the month they drop. One day one title plus a second game from the catalog beats buying either outright, and the July 28 Halo launch is the cleanest test of that math you will get this year.
Skip it if you play two or three older games a year. At ₹13,068 annually you could own four full price games instead, and the Steam sale crowd is not wrong about that arithmetic.

2. PC Game Pass: the value pick for PC only players

If you game only on PC, this is Ultimate minus the parts you would never use. Day one first party launches, EA Play and a 300 plus game library for ₹879, which is ₹210 a month less than Ultimate. What you give up is cloud streaming and console access, and if you own a capable PC you were not going to stream anyway.

On the Sony side of the fence, our PS5 Pro in India guide covers whether the premium console is worth it before GTA 6.

The sore point is history: this tier cost ₹449 barely ten months ago, and the doubling still stings on r/IndianGaming. The only two ways to soften it are annual codes from Flipkart and Amazon, which regularly work out near ₹704 to ₹795 a month effective, and the intermittent first month intro offers. Both are covered in the cheaper ways to pay section below.

Buy it if your PC can run modern releases and you want day one games without console baggage. This is the best value per rupee of the four tiers for a PC gamer.
Skip it if your PC is too weak for new releases. Cloud streaming is not in this tier, so a potato PC gains nothing here, look at Essential or Premium with cloud instead.

3. Game Pass Premium: fine, if you can wait a year

Premium is the tier for people who feel no pull toward launch day. ₹699 gets a 200 plus game library on console and PC, online console multiplayer and cloud streaming with shorter queues than Essential. New Xbox first party games do arrive, just up to a year late, which for a backlog player changes nothing about how they already play.

The catch is what sits ₹180 above it. PC Game Pass at ₹879 adds day one releases and EA Play for less than the cost of a thali per month, so Premium only wins for console owners specifically. If you are on PC, skip this tier entirely, the comparison is not close. And note what Premium does not include: no EA Play, so the FC and Battlefield back catalog is absent.

Buy it if you own an Xbox, play from the backlog anyway, and want multiplayer plus a big library at the lowest sensible console price.
Skip it if you are a PC player or a day one player. PC Game Pass beats it for the first group, Ultimate for the second, and Premium serves neither group well.

4. Game Pass Essential: the cloud door for potato PCs

Essential exists for one Indian use case that actually makes sense: you have a laptop or phone that cannot run modern games, you live near the Pune or Chennai cloud servers, and ₹499 buys you a way to play real console games on hardware that has no business running them. The 50 plus game library is small but not junk, and cloud access is included since the October restructure.

Know what you are not getting. No day one releases, no EA Play, and the same ₹499 stacked for two months nearly buys a month of Ultimate. The conversion trick that once made Essential a currency for cheap Ultimate is also effectively dead, the math section below shows why. Treat Essential as a cloud trial subscription: run it for a month, test your ping to the cloud servers, then either upgrade or walk away.

Buy it as a first month experiment if you have weak hardware and good fiber near Pune or Chennai. It is the cheapest legitimate way to find out whether cloud gaming works from your city.
Skip it if you already own a gaming PC or plan to play new releases. The library is the smallest of the four tiers and nothing arrives early.

When the October 2025 hike landed, Microsoft sent Indian subscribers an email with one loaded sentence: existing subscriptions keep their old price for now, unless you cancel. Thousands of Indians are still riding that clause today, paying ₹349 or ₹449 a month for plans that cost ₹499 to ₹879 new. On r/IndianGaming they call it the do not blink game, and the community advice has hardened into three rules.

  • Never cancel, even for a month. The moment your subscription lapses, the legacy price dies and resubscribing costs the current rate. There is no documented way back
  • Do not switch tiers. Upgrading or downgrading counts as a new subscription at new prices
  • Keep your payment method alive. A failed renewal can end the subscription the same as a cancellation, so if your card expires, update it before the billing date. Recurring billing runs most reliably on a card, community reports on UPI auto renew mandates for Microsoft are mixed, so treat UPI as the way you buy codes, not the way you keep a legacy subscription alive

The question every ₹349 and ₹449 holder asks next: can I redeem a cheap Flipkart or Amazon code on top of my grandfathered subscription? Honest answer: nobody has a documented safe path. Redeeming prepaid time changes how the subscription bills, and community reports on whether the legacy rate survives afterwards contradict each other. If your old price matters to you, treat code redemption as the same risk as cancelling. The codes route below is for people already paying current prices.

Also read the fine print the way Microsoft wrote it: old prices survive for now. Nothing stops a future change from ending grandfathering entirely, it exists at Microsoft’s pleasure, not by promise, which is one more reason never to give it up voluntarily.

One recurring confusion: people report the Xbox app showing the new price while their account page shows the old one. The account page at account.microsoft.com is the truth, it shows what you will actually be charged at next renewal. If that page still shows your old price, you are grandfathered and nothing needs doing.

Cloud gaming in India: Pune and Chennai bliss, distance tax everywhere else

Xbox Cloud Gaming finally reached India in November 2025, with servers in Pune and Chennai, and the launch thread on r/IndianGaming filled with two completely different experiences depending on geography. Near the servers the reports are glowing: players in Pune and Bangalore report ping dropping from 100 plus on foreign servers to single digits, one wrote that ping went from over 100 to 6 and I am literally crying in happiness. Mumbai sits about 150km from the Pune cluster and community reports put it firmly in the good zone. Far from the servers the story flips: Delhi is a thousand plus kilometres from either cluster and reports land around 40 to 60ms, fine for single player, rough for anything twitchy, while Northeast India reports 80 to 85ms, where one player who bought a month specifically for cloud called it unplayable and regretted the purchase.

Quality has hard limits you should know before paying. Indian servers stream at 1080p, there is no 1440p option here, and the bitrate is conservative enough that fast games look soft, players compare it unfavourably to the Japan servers. Streams run on Series S class hardware. Queues exist at peak evening hours and vanish late at night. Essential, Premium and Ultimate include cloud, PC Game Pass does not. What Ultimate buys over the others is queue priority, the shortest waits at peak hours, plus streaming of select games you own. The 1080p cap applies to every tier equally in India.

Two genuinely useful tricks from the community. First, Fortnite streams free with just a Microsoft account, no subscription, which makes it the zero cost way to test how cloud feels from your city before spending a rupee. Second, the browser extension BetterXCloud lets you force higher bitrate and tweak the stream, and it is the single most thanked tip in every Indian cloud thread. If cloud is your main use case, also read our cloud gaming comparison for India, GeForce NOW rents you far stronger hardware for pure streaming.

The rupee math: Game Pass vs just buying your games

The loudest counter argument on r/IndianGaming deserves a straight answer: for ₹13,068 a year of Ultimate you can own four full price games forever, or a dozen older titles in Steam sales at ₹299 to ₹500 each. So run the actual math on how you play, not on the catalog size.

  • You play 1 to 3 games a year, mostly older ones: buy them. Steam sales win and it is not close. A ₹299 game you own forever beats ₹1,089 a month you rent
  • You play day one releases: Ultimate or PC Game Pass wins the months those releases land. Halo on July 28 is ₹4,000 standalone or one month of PC Game Pass at ₹879
  • You binge in bursts: the community consensus strategy is subscribe for a big release month, finish everything, cancel, repeat. Nothing stops you doing this on the new prices, just never do it on a grandfathered old price
  • You have weak hardware near Pune or Chennai: cloud via Essential at ₹499 is the cheapest legal AAA access in the country, no other option comes close

One correction to the annual sticker: nobody staying subscribed should pay it. The codes route below brings Ultimate near ₹9,500 a year and PC Game Pass near ₹8,500 effective, which softens the four games comparison without flipping it. And the conversion trick, for anyone still quoting it: buying cheap Essential months and converting them to Ultimate died as a strategy in April 2026. Essential converts at 45 percent, so a month of Ultimate built from ₹499 Essential purchases effectively costs ₹1,109, that is 499 divided by 0.45, more than just paying ₹1,089 directly. India also caps stacking at 12 plus 1 months, a limit users confirmed through Xbox support. The trick only revives if you find genuinely discounted codes, which brings us to paying less.

Cheaper legit ways to pay, and the no card UPI path

Nobody should pay Microsoft sticker price monthly if they plan to stay subscribed. The legitimate discount routes Indians actually use, roughly in order of savings: Flipkart and Amazon sell official India region digital codes where annual works out near ₹704 to ₹795 a month effective. Paytm has run 3 month passes at legacy prices. The ₹59 and ₹99 first month intro offers appear and vanish, if one shows on your account, take it. Stack a cashback card on top where you can.

Two warnings from the same threads. Region matters: a code sold as India by a gray market reseller can still refuse activation, one player’s Loaded.com key came back incorrect region with no refund. Stick to Flipkart, Amazon and Paytm for codes, buy from their gift card sections rather than marketplace sellers, and time big purchases to sale events, code discounts run deepest during Big Billion Days and the Great Indian Festival. And avoid any YouTube free Game Pass scheme, the scam reports are constant.

No credit card? You do not need one. Microsoft Store India accepts UPI directly, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM all work for the subscription itself. The other clean path is buying a code from Flipkart or Amazon with UPI and redeeming it at microsoft.com/redeem. The one place cards still matter is console bundle offers that demand an international credit card, which is exactly when the code redeem route saves you.

What is coming to Game Pass, and what is not

The July to October slate is the strongest case for a short subscription this year: Halo: Campaign Evolved on July 28 day one, the first mainline Halo also launching on PS5, followed by Gears of War: E-Day on October 6 day one. The July wave brought Palworld 1.0 on July 10, with The Planet Crafter following July 21. Fable, previously expected in 2026, slipped to February 2027.

What is not coming day one anymore: Call of Duty. The April price cut traded launch day CoD away, new entries now arrive roughly a year later. Black Ops 7 is already in the library, but its successor will not be there at launch. If CoD is your one game, buy it standalone and skip the subscription entirely, and check our console buying guide if you are choosing hardware around this.

How we checked this, and what we did not do

Every price on this page was read off the official Xbox India store and compare pages on July 12, 2026, with screenshots taken the same day, two of them embedded above. Tier contents come from the official plan pages. The price history, grandfathering behaviour, cloud experience reports and buying tricks come from Microsoft’s announcements and from reading the largest Indian community threads on each event, including the October hike, the grandfathering email and the November cloud launch threads on r/IndianGaming.

What we did not do: run city by city cloud latency tests ourselves. The Pune, Bangalore, Delhi and Northeast numbers quoted are from players in those cities, attributed as community reports, not our lab work. If you run the free Fortnite cloud test from your city, send us your ping and city through the contact page and this article gets an India cloud map nobody else has.

Some links on this page may earn us a commission at no extra cost to you. Microsoft did not pay for placement, every tier verdict on this page carries a skip case, and the rupee math section tells backlog players not to subscribe at all.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my old ₹349 or ₹449 Game Pass price survive if I cancel?

No. The grandfathered price lives only while your subscription stays active on auto renew. Cancel, lapse, or switch tiers and you rejoin at current prices, ₹499 to ₹1,089 depending on tier. Check your real renewal price at account.microsoft.com, not in the Xbox app, which often shows the new sticker price instead.

Which Game Pass tier should a PC only player buy in India?

PC Game Pass at ₹879 a month. It has the same day one first party releases as Ultimate plus EA Play, and drops only console access and cloud streaming, which a PC player rarely needs. Premium at ₹699 is a bad PC deal by comparison, it loses day one releases to save just ₹180.

Does Xbox Cloud Gaming work well in Delhi or Northeast India?

Depends how far you are from Pune or Chennai, the only two Indian server clusters. Delhi reports land around 40 to 60ms, fine for single player, rough for competitive play, and the Northeast sees 80ms plus, which one player who bought a month for cloud called unplayable. Test free first: Fortnite streams with just a Microsoft account and shows exactly what your city feels like.

Is Game Pass worth it compared to Steam sales in India?

Depends entirely on volume and recency. Day one players win with Game Pass, one ₹4,000 launch title covers four months of PC Game Pass. Backlog players lose: ₹13,000 a year of Ultimate buys a decade of Steam sale games you own forever. The binge strategy splits the difference, subscribe for big release months, then cancel.

How do I pay for Game Pass in India without a credit card?

Two clean paths. Microsoft Store India accepts UPI directly, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm and BHIM all work for subscriptions. Or buy an official India region code from Flipkart or Amazon using UPI and redeem it at microsoft.com/redeem. No international credit card is needed for either route.

Do Game Pass codes from Amazon or Flipkart expire?

Community reports say unredeemed official India codes have no printed expiry and have activated fine months after purchase. The real risk is region, not time: gray market resellers have sold codes that returned incorrect region errors on Indian accounts. Buy from Flipkart, Amazon or Paytm and the expiry question stops mattering.

Is the ₹99 first month Game Pass offer still available?

Intermittently. Microsoft rotates ₹59 and ₹99 first month offers for new and returning members, they appear on the official India store for weeks and vanish again. If your account shows one, take it, there is no better legal price. The 14 day PC trial that existed before October 2025 is gone.

Is Call of Duty day one on Game Pass now?

No. That ended with the April 2026 price cut. New Call of Duty titles now reach Game Pass about a year after launch, during the following holiday season. Black Ops 7 is already in the Ultimate library, but future entries will launch as paid standalone titles first.

Can I share Game Pass Ultimate with friends or family in India?

Not officially. The old family preview never shipped in India, and splitting one account across players breaks Microsoft’s terms even though people do it. Console home sharing lets two people in one home share benefits on one Xbox, which is the only sanctioned version of sharing that exists today.

Does the Essential to Ultimate conversion trick still work in 2026?

The mechanics work, the math does not. Since April 2026, Essential converts at 45 percent, so a month of Ultimate built from ₹499 Essential purchases effectively costs about ₹1,109, worse than paying ₹1,089 directly. India also caps stacking at 12 plus 1 months. Only genuinely discounted codes revive the trick.
