15 Best Survival Games Under 10GB for PC (2026): Build, Craft, Survive
Storage is expensive. Bandwidth in India is not always fast. And survival games have a reputation for bloated file sizes after years of patches and DLC. The good news is that some of the best survival games ever made are shockingly small. We are talking 200MB for a game that gives you 500 hours of content.
Every size on this list is verified from Steam and PCGamingWiki as of April 2026. We also have a section at the bottom calling out the survival games other sites wrongly list as under 10GB so you do not waste hours downloading something that will not fit.

15 Best Survival Games Under 10GB for PC (2026)
1. Terraria
Developer: Re-Logic | Release: 2011 | Size: ~200MB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: 2.0 GHz dual-core
- RAM: 2GB
- Storage: ~200MB
- Graphics: Intel HD 3000 or any GPU
200 megabytes. You will spend more storage on a couple of WhatsApp videos. Terraria packs in 20+ biomes, dozens of bosses, full hardmode progression, thousands of craftable items, and co-op for up to 8 players. The Journey\’s End update in 2020 was supposed to be the final update, and it added so much content that players are still working through it in 2026.
The survival loop is genuinely satisfying. Day one you are chopping trees, making a shelter, and scrambling for food before night. By week two of playtime you are fighting a mechanical destroyer with gear you crafted from scratch. The game rewards preparation and exploration more than most survival titles ten times its size.
On a Jio connection in a Tier 3 city, this downloads in about 3 minutes. Runs at 60fps on any Intel HD graphics chip from 2013 onwards. At around Rs 250 on Steam it is one of the best value survival games on PC. Also worth mentioning for players building a full library of under 10GB games.
2. Don\’t Starve
Developer: Klei Entertainment | Release: 2013 | Size: ~500MB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: 1.7 GHz dual-core
- RAM: 2GB
- Storage: ~500MB
- Graphics: Intel HD 4000 or any GPU
Don\’t Starve drops you in a procedurally generated wilderness and gives you one job: survive. No tutorials, no hand-holding. You figure out that you need to eat, stay warm, maintain your sanity, and not get eaten by things that come out at night. The art style is Tim Burton by way of a gothic children\’s book and it works perfectly.
The sanity mechanic is what makes this game stand out from other survival games. Stay in the dark too long, eat raw food too often, be near creepy things for too long and your character starts hallucinating. Shadow creatures appear. You have to manage your mental state alongside hunger and health, which creates situations no other survival game replicates.
Don\’t Starve Together is the co-op version and is free if you own Don\’t Starve on Steam. It has been kept alive by the developer with consistent free updates for years. 500MB total. Indian gamers on older Acer Aspire or Lenovo budget laptops will have no issues running this at full settings.
3. Project Zomboid
Developer: The Indie Stone | Release: 2013 (Early Access) | Size: ~4GB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Intel Core i5 (2nd gen or later)
- RAM: 8GB
- Storage: ~4GB
- Graphics: Intel HD 4600 / GTX 760 recommended
Project Zomboid is the most serious zombie survival simulation on PC and at approximately 4GB it is also one of the best value purchases in the genre. This is not an action game. Sprinting burns calories you cannot spare. Noise attracts hordes. Infections require antibiotics. You can die from a broken leg because you fell out of a window in a panic.
The game asks you a simple question at the start: how will you die? Because you will die. The goal is not to win. The goal is to survive as long as possible, learn from each death, and build better habits in your next run. The modding community is massive. Build 42 brought major underground systems and crafting overhauls that added significant replay value.
For Indian gamers, Project Zomboid works great for long offline sessions. No internet required after download. The multiplayer is completely optional. Grab some friends on Steam co-op and barricade a police station together for 6 hours. At around Rs 800 it is priced reasonably and goes on sale frequently.

4. RimWorld
Developer: Ludeon Studios | Release: 2018 | Size: ~500MB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Core 2 Duo or higher
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~500MB
- Graphics: Intel HD 4000 or any GPU (512MB VRAM)
500 megabytes. RimWorld is a colony survival sim where three survivors crash-land on a rim world planet and you manage everything about their lives. Food, shelter, emotions, relationships, injuries, raids, trade caravans, research, construction. The AI storyteller system throws curveballs at you constantly, and each storyteller has a different personality ranging from methodical to brutal.
The emergent storytelling in RimWorld is the best in any survival game. Your colonist can lose an arm in a raid, develop depression from a failed romance, get addicted to painkillers, then recover and become your most skilled surgeon. None of this is scripted. It all emerges from the simulation.
For a 500MB file, the content density is absurd. The base game alone gives you hundreds of hours. Add mods from the Steam Workshop (also free) and you could play for years. This is one game where the small file size is genuinely shocking for how much it contains.
5. FTL: Faster Than Light
Developer: Subset Games | Release: 2012 | Size: ~175MB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: 2 GHz single-core
- RAM: 2GB
- Storage: ~175MB
- Graphics: Intel HD 3000 or any GPU
175 megabytes. FTL is a spaceship survival roguelike where you manage a crew, navigate sector by sector, upgrade weapons, deal with fires, hull breaches, and boarders, and try to reach the final sector before the rebel fleet catches up. It sounds simple. It is not simple.
Every run teaches you something. The first time your ship gets boarded and your crew gets overwhelmed while you had shields down you learn to never do that again. The next run you handle it differently. FTL has been in people\’s libraries for over a decade and is still played regularly because each run plays out differently.
At 175MB this is the smallest survival game on the list. It runs on any hardware made after 2008. On a 50Mbps connection it downloads in about 30 seconds. For anyone with a very old PC or a budget laptop from 2015, FTL is a guaranteed good time.
6. This War of Mine
Developer: 11 bit studios | Release: 2014 | Size: ~3GB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~3GB
- Graphics: GeForce 8800 GT / Intel HD 4000
This War of Mine is not a power fantasy. You are not a soldier. You are a group of civilians trapped in a besieged city, trying to survive without food, medicine, or warmth. During the day you fortify and craft. At night you send someone scavenging into buildings where other survivors may shoot you for your supplies.
The moral weight of every decision is what makes this game feel different from everything else on this list. Do you steal medicine from a sick elderly couple who cannot defend themselves? Do you trade with a drunk man who has alcohol but might not survive winter anyway? There are no correct answers and the game does not pretend there are.
The game has been compared to the Siege of Sarajevo in its documentation of civilian suffering in wartime. It is a genuinely heavy experience and one of the most meaningful survival games ever made. At approximately 3GB it is also well within the limit for Indian gamers managing tight SSD space.
7. Oxygen Not Included
Developer: Klei Entertainment | Release: 2019 | Size: ~2GB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Dual core 2.4 GHz
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~2GB
- Graphics: Intel HD 4600 / GTX 550 Ti
Your duplicants are stuck underground on an asteroid. They need oxygen, food, water, and sanitation. All of these systems interact with each other in ways that will surprise you. Your bathroom pollutes the water. Polluted water off-gasses polluted oxygen. You need to filter the oxygen. But the filtration uses power. Power generates heat. Too much heat kills your duplicants. Managing temperature becomes the game within the game.
This is Klei\’s deepest game and one of the best base-building survival experiences on PC at any file size. The learning curve is steep but the game\’s simulation depth keeps you coming back even after 300 hours because you can always optimise something further.
At around 2GB it downloads in about 3 minutes on a 100Mbps connection. It handles well on mid-range systems. Runs acceptably on Intel HD 4600 at lower simulation settings.
You have already gone through 7 of the 15 best survival games under 10GB. Keep going for the rest.
8. Darkwood
Developer: Acid Wizard Studio | Release: 2017 | Size: ~2GB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Intel Core i3 3 GHz
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~2GB
- Graphics: GeForce GT 630 / Intel HD 5000
Darkwood is a top-down horror survival game set in a Soviet-era forest that has been overtaken by something supernatural. During the day you explore, scavenge, and craft. At night you barricade your hideout and try to survive until morning. The horror comes not from jump scares but from the darkness, the sounds, and not knowing what is outside your boarded-up windows.
The field of view mechanic is what separates Darkwood from every other horror survival game. You cannot see around corners. You cannot see behind you. You only see what your character can see. In the dark this means you can hear something breathing near you and not be able to find it. It is effective in a way few horror games achieve.
At about 2GB this is a complete, polished experience that took Acid Wizard Studio three years to build. The developers released it for free on The Pirate Bay themselves before Steam launch specifically because they wanted players who could not afford it to play it. That tells you a lot about the team. At the current Steam India price it is easily worth it.
9. The Long Dark
Developer: Hinterland Studio | Release: 2017 | Size: ~8GB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Intel Core i5 3.1 GHz
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~8GB
- Graphics: GeForce GTX 660 (no Intel HD support)
The Long Dark is a first-person wilderness survival game set in post-geomagnetic collapse Northern Canada. There are no zombies, no bandits, no supernatural enemies. The only threats are cold, hunger, thirst, wildlife, and bad decisions. It is one of the most grounded survival experiences on PC and the atmosphere is unlike anything else in the genre.
The Wintermute story mode takes you through multiple episodes with full voice acting. The survival sandbox mode is where the real depth is. You pick a region, set difficulty, and see how long you can last. Each region has distinct geography, wildlife patterns, and supply locations. Learning a region well takes dozens of hours.
At approximately 8GB it is the largest game on this list but comfortably under the 10GB limit. The Wintermute episodes plus Tales from the Far Territory DLC give you a complete narrative alongside the endless survival sandbox. Needs a dedicated GPU, so Intel HD users should look at other options on this list.
10. Minecraft Java Edition
Developer: Mojang | Release: 2011 | Size: ~2GB (launcher + runtime) | Offline: Yes (with account)
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Intel Core i3 3 GHz or AMD equivalent
- RAM: 4GB (8GB recommended for mods)
- Storage: ~2GB (launcher + base game, world saves are extra)
- Graphics: Intel HD 4000 minimum
The base Minecraft Java installation sits around 1GB but with the launcher and Java runtime the total installation is closer to 2GB. World saves you generate are stored separately and grow over time with exploration, but the game itself stays under 10GB. Note that modpacks like ATM9 or Vault Hunters can push total installations much higher, but vanilla Minecraft is fine.
Everyone knows what Minecraft is. The survival mode starts you with nothing. You punch trees. You build a shelter. You survive night one. Then you go deeper, mine resources, fight the Ender Dragon, build a farm, automate the farm, and somehow 400 hours have passed. The recent updates, from the Caves and Cliffs update through Tricky Trials in 2024, have added enormous depth to the survival experience.
For Indian players, Minecraft realms let you host your own world. Playing with classmates, hostel roommates, or friends in different cities over private servers is one of the best ways to spend a weekend. The Indian Minecraft community is large and active on Discord.
11. Muck
Developer: Dani | Release: 2021 | Size: ~500MB | Offline: Yes | Free: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Intel Core i5 or equivalent
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~500MB
- Graphics: Intel HD 4000 or dedicated GPU recommended
Muck is a free survival roguelike by solo developer Dani, built partly as a challenge and partly as a joke. You land on a procedurally generated island, gather resources, craft items, fight waves of enemies at night, find power-ups, and try to escape. That is the entire game. It is fun.
The mechanics are simple but the combination of roguelike upgrades and survival crafting clicks well. Each run you find different power-ups, weapons, and gear. Some runs you become an unstoppable melee fighter. Others you build a bow and kite everything. Co-op with friends makes it significantly more chaotic and more fun.
It is completely free. 500MB. Runs on integrated graphics. For a free survival game made by one person, Muck punches well above its weight and has over 50,000 reviews on Steam. Start here if you want a no-cost entry point into survival gaming.
12. Neo Scavenger
Developer: Blue Bottle Games | Release: 2014 | Size: ~500MB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Any modern dual-core
- RAM: 2GB
- Storage: ~500MB
- Graphics: Any with 512MB VRAM / Intel HD 2000 works
Neo Scavenger is a post-apocalyptic survival game set in the ruins of Detroit. You wake up in a cryogenic facility with no memory. Outside: ruins, scavengers, mutant creatures, and other survivors who may or may not want to kill you for your shoes. The game is turn-based with hex-grid movement and a loot-focused survival loop.
The skill system at character creation determines your playstyle completely. Take botany skills and you survive by foraging. Take hacking and you can unlock certain areas. Take the trapping skill and you can set snares. No two playthroughs build the same survival toolkit, and the encounter writing is detailed enough that the world feels real despite the low-fi presentation.
This is the most underrated game on this entire list. At around Rs 400 and 500MB it asks almost nothing of your hardware or wallet and gives back a deep survival experience that most players will not finish on their first ten attempts.
13. UnReal World
Developer: Sami Maaranen | Release: 1992 (ongoing) | Size: ~100MB | Offline: Yes | Free: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Any
- RAM: 512MB
- Storage: ~100MB
- Graphics: Any (software rendering)
UnReal World has been in development since 1992 and is still being updated. It is a survival RPG set in Iron Age Finland, one of the most detailed wilderness survival simulations ever made. You can hunt elk, smoke fish, build a shelter, craft skis, negotiate with neighbouring tribes, and die of hypothermia if you miscalculate a winter crossing.
The depth of the hunting and trapping simulation alone is remarkable. Set different trap types for different animals. Track prey by footprints. Clean and cook what you catch properly or risk food poisoning. The entire Finnish wilderness culture is baked into the simulation. It is an experience no other game replicates.
100 megabytes. Free. Runs on a machine from 2002. If you want to see how much a single dedicated developer can pack into a tiny file over decades of work, UnReal World is the answer. Available free on the official website. Also on Steam for a small optional payment to support the developer.
14. Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead
Developer: CleverRaven (Community) | Release: 2013 (ongoing) | Size: ~300MB | Offline: Yes | Free: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11 / Linux
- CPU: Any
- RAM: 2GB
- Storage: ~300MB
- Graphics: Any (tile sets available)
Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead is a free open-source roguelike survival set after a multi-faction apocalypse. Zombies, interdimensional creatures, nuclear fallout, and hostile factions. The level of simulation depth is extraordinary for a completely free game. You can disassemble a car for parts, modify weapons, craft mutagens to alter your body, learn skills by doing, and build a mobile base inside a converted bus.
The game uses a tile set for visual players but can also be played in ASCII mode on any machine ever made. The community has been adding content for over a decade. This is the closest thing gaming has to an open-world survival RPG that simulates everything.
300MB. Free. The only catch is that the interface requires patience to learn. Spend 30 minutes with a beginner\’s guide and the depth unlocks quickly. Among the survival game communities on Reddit this is consistently recommended as a must-play for serious survival fans. Check the offline games list for more games in this category.
15. The Forest
Developer: Endnight Games | Release: 2018 | Size: ~6GB | Offline: Yes
System Requirements
- OS: Windows 10/11
- CPU: Intel Core i5 2.4 GHz
- RAM: 4GB
- Storage: ~6GB
- Graphics: GeForce GTX 560 Ti or Radeon HD 6950
Your plane crashes on a remote peninsula. Your son gets taken by cannibalistic mutants. You survive. You build. You explore. The Forest is an open-world survival horror game where you gather food, build structures, craft weapons, and eventually push into the cave systems beneath the peninsula looking for your son and the truth about what happened.
The building system is surprisingly deep. You can construct full fortified bases, traps, and defensive walls. The mutants behave differently based on your actions. Attack them repeatedly and they grow more hostile and start wearing the bones of your kills as armour. Stay passive and they watch but do not always attack. The AI creates a tense dynamic that makes every encounter feel significant.
Note: the sequel, Sons of the Forest, is over 20GB. Make sure you are buying The Forest (App ID 242760) and not the sequel. The original is approximately 6GB, under budget, and a complete game with full ending and co-op support for up to 8 players.
Survival Games Other Sites List as Under 10GB (But Are Not)
Size errors in gaming articles are common. Here are the most frequently misrepresented survival games you will find on competitor lists. We checked these directly in April 2026.
| Game | What Sites Claim | Actual Size (April 2026) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subnautica | “Under 10GB” | ~12 to 14GB | EXCEEDS LIMIT |
| Subnautica: Below Zero | “Under 10GB” | ~15GB | EXCEEDS LIMIT |
| Valheim | “Under 2GB” | ~1.3GB (base, no worlds) | OK but check world data |
| Sons of the Forest | “The Forest sequel, also under 10GB” | ~20GB+ | EXCEEDS LIMIT |
| The Long Dark (with all DLC) | “5-6GB” | ~8GB with Tales from the Far Territory | Under 10GB but larger than listed |
The biggest offender is Subnautica. Multiple high-traffic gaming sites still list it as under 10GB based on its 2018 launch size. After years of updates and the full game is now 12 to 14GB. Subnautica: Below Zero is even larger. If you have limited storage and are relying on those articles, you will be disappointed after the download completes.
Sons of the Forest is frequently confused with The Forest in search results. They are different games. The original The Forest is approximately 6GB and on this list. Sons of the Forest is the 2023 sequel and is over 20GB. Make sure to check the Steam App ID before purchasing.
Valheim is a special case. The game base install is about 1.3GB. However, generated world files grow significantly with exploration, and if you have large modpacks the total footprint is much higher. The game is fine as a survival game but the install size claims on other sites often ignore world data.
Download Tips for Indian Gamers
Getting the most out of your bandwidth and storage when downloading survival games in India takes a bit of planning. These tips apply specifically to Indian internet conditions.
Use Steam off-peak hours for fastest speeds. Jio Fiber and Airtel Xstream have congested nodes between 7pm and 11pm. Start large downloads after midnight or before 7am. On a 100Mbps Jio connection off-peak, a 10GB game downloads in around 14 minutes. Peak hours can slow that to 30-45 minutes on the same plan.
Steam India regional pricing is good. Most games on this list are under Rs 1000 at full price on Steam India, and many drop to Rs 100 to Rs 300 during sales. The Steam Summer Sale (usually June) and Winter Sale (December) are the best times to build your library. Set games to your wishlist and Steam will notify you when prices drop.
Epic Games Store gives free games every week. Add the free game to your account even if you do not plan to play it immediately. It stays in your library permanently. Epic has given away several survival-adjacent titles including Subnautica (when it was smaller), various strategy games, and indie titles. Check every Thursday.
Managing SSD space on 256GB laptops. After Windows 11 (~25GB), browsers, and apps, most 256GB SSD laptops have about 60 to 80GB left for games. The entire 15-game list on this page fits in under 50GB combined. You can have all 15 installed simultaneously with space to spare. For comparison, a single game like Cyberpunk 2077 at 70GB would take your entire game storage.
Use Steam\’s move install location feature. If you have an external HDD for large game installs, Steam can move games between drives without re-downloading. Keep your under-10GB games on the SSD for load times and move anything larger to external storage.
Check PCGamingWiki before downloading any game listed as under 10GB on other sites. PCGamingWiki tracks current install sizes and notes when games have grown with patches. It takes 30 seconds to check and saves you from wasted downloads. See our complete under 10GB games list for more verified sizes across all genres.
The gaming PC that plays all of these, by budget
These downloads stay small so they run on almost anything. When you are ready to upgrade, here are three setups we price-checked and benchmarked for Indian gamers.

Project Zomboid and The Long Dark have deeply replayable sandbox survival modes. FTL is a roguelike where no two runs are identical. Cataclysm: DDA and UnReal World are essentially endless sandboxes with no set win condition.
